With age or after pregnancy, the tissue around the breasts can sag. Excess skin makes the breasts appear saggy. To correct this, many women undergo a surgical breast lift, also called a mastopexy. During this breast surgery, the breasts are tightened and excess tissue is removed. It is also possible to increase the volume of the breasts with implants during a breast lift.
A breast lift is similar in procedure to a breast reduction. The difference between the two treatments is that during a breast lift, only excess skin is removed and no glandular or fatty tissue. Mastopexy is performed either as an inpatient or outpatient procedure. It is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure takes about 2-3 hours.
There are three procedures for breast lift, which differ in their incisions, depending on the extent of sagging of the skin and the shape of the sagging breast.
The day after the breast lift, the drains are usually removed and the patient is given a special support bra, which should now be worn for a total of 6 weeks.
The bra protects the breasts from external influences and has a tissue-protecting function. It is worn to support healing and to prevent excessive scarring. Physical rest for 2 weeks is very important after a breast lift. Exercise can commence again after the 4th week and after 8-12 weeks without further restrictions.
About 8-12 weeks after the breast lift, the final result of the surgery is visible. The breast is clearly lifted, firmer, and tighter. Overall, the breast lift has a rejuvenating effect.
