Forehead lift

Frown lines and forehead wrinkles are the consequences of our facial expressions, which become more and more noticeable with age. While hyaluronic acid and Botox can provide temporary smoothing of the skin, a surgical forehead lift provides permanent results.

What happens during the procedure of a forehead lift?

A forehead lift is an integral part of a traditional facelift, but it can also be performed separately as a stand-alone procedure. Normally, a forehead lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with twilight sleep and takes about 1-1.5 hours. There are two different techniques, which differ in how the incision process is done.

In an open forehead lift, a long incision is made at the scalp hairline, running from ear to ear across the entire forehead area. The skin is detached from the underlying tissue so that it can be removed, if necessary. The facial skin is being pulled up slightly, excess skin is removed, and the edges of the wound are sutured. This way, the forehead is smoothed, wrinkles are reduced and the eyebrows are slightly raised.

The alternative to the open brow lift is an endoscopic brow lift where several short incisions are being made along the hairline. A camera endoscope is inserted through the incisions, allowing the surgeon to get a picture of the tissue under the skin. A second instrument is now used to smooth the tissue and muscles. With the help of sutures below the skin surface, the eyebrows can also be lifted and fixed. Excess skin is removed, the incisions in the area of the hairline are sutured, and the forehead lift is complete.

What is important after the forehead lift?

Usually, the patient can leave the clinic a few hours after the procedure, but an inpatient stay of one night is also possible. For about 1-2 weeks, the patient should take it easy and avoid heavy movement on the forehead muscles and skin. Slight swellings and hematomas will subside after a few days. It should be mentioned that the healing phase after an open forehead lift is somewhat longer than after an endoscopic forehead lift. About 3-4 weeks after the forehead lift, the final results are visible.
